SDG 6 Review Meetings Held in Three Local Governments

Three different review meetings on SDG 6.1 and 6.2 (water and sanitation indicators of Sustainable Development Goals) were organized in Kirtipur Municipality, Golbazar Municipality and Lalitpur Metropolitan City in March 2022. The meeting was organized by NGO Federation of Nepal (NFN) in collaboration with Water Aid, and Nepal SDGs Forum in the presence of officials from Ministry of Water Supply.
The objectives of the program were to discuss the status, plan, and implementation of drinking water and sanitation on WASH indicators of SDG 6.1 and 6.2; to discuss the monitoring, evaluation, data management, and citizen participation in drinking water and sanitation; and collect and utilize views, comments, and suggestions of concerned stakeholders.
Mayor, Deputy Mayor, ward chairs of respective municipalities, CSOs, private sectors engaged in water, sanitation services, media were present in the program.
Representatives of respective local governments presented about the situation of water and sanitation in their municipality and their progress on localization of SDGs 6.1 and 6.2.
Mr. Latshering Glan Tamang, researcher from Mitra Samaj Nepal presented a study report on WASH financing of all three municipalities. Mr. Tamang shared details of investments in the sectors of drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene in three fiscal years.
From these events, it is reflected that capacity development, investment and information on WASH is necessary for the effective execution of the WASH planning and implementation. Municipalities needs to build awareness for action and localization of SDG 6.1 and 6.2. The municipality should create a WASH Unit to support the localization of the SDG 6.1 and 6.2. Proper coordination and consultation are necessary among concerned line agencies and three tires of government while making plans, policies, guidelines and implementing the WASH program.
